Weekly Rides & Workouts

Tuesday Night Bike Chain Ride

This is NOT an official Duke event, but is a great training ride.  The Bike Chain ride is a ~1.5 hour, 28-mile ride that tackles the Mt Sinai hill twice.  The first time up is fast-paced, but regroups a bit at the top.  After looping around, the pace picks up and this ride turns into an aggressive race on the second time up the hill.  Typically breakaways and chase groups emerge by the top of Sinai, and it’s a race to the final sprint line at the end of NC-10.  This is a regular ride throughout the summer, pending weather.

Start details: 5:30pm from The Bicycle Chain (next to whole foods)

Wednesday Night Hammer Ride

The Duke cycling team hosts a regular, high speed ride that features 4 sprint points, one right after the agonizing ascent up the Pleasant Green Drive hill.  This ride is ~36 miles long and will leave your legs burning.

Start Details: Leave from the Speed Bump on Towerview Drive.  Start time is changing this week, due to the spring time change.  Stay tuned to the bike email list for more details.

Saturday Morning Endurance Ride

This ride typically leaves at 9am from the speed bump / crosswalk on Towerview Drive.  Since race season is almost upon us and most races are Saturday / Sunday, this ride will not be consistently offered every week.  Confirmation of the ride will be sent on the email list each week.

Sunday Ice Cream Ride

Some people on the team happen to like ice cream and chocolate milk in addition to cycling.  So every Sunday at 11am, we have a 30 mile relaxed ride to and from Maple View Farm.  This ride typically averages ~15-17 mph and is meant to be a social & easy ride.  Come out to this ride and meet other cycling enthusiasts!  During race season (Feb – April), this ride may not happen every week so check the email list for further details each week.

Trainer Workouts

Weekly trainer workouts have officially ended for the spring, mainly due to the amazing weather.  Triathlon team still holds several Tuesday brick options (6am, 7:30am, 4:30pm, and 6pm).  Feel free to attend these, but note that the afternoon sessions are crowded and priority goes to triathletes.  Tri team also hosts a Thursday morning technique trainer session, 7:30-8:30am.

Orange County Speedway Races

January 30 & February 6 2010

These races are a perfect  warm up for the collegiate road season.  Orange County Speedway (OCS) is a 600 meter track
that is banked at 19° and ideal for cycling races.  If you are new to racing, this is a great way to get comfortable riding in a group at competitive paces.  If you are a seasoned veteran, this is a good way to shake off the rust/dust from a cold winter.

While these are NOT official Duke rides, we will plan to meet on campus and bike there and back for warm-up / cool-down.

Also, you must be registered with USA Cycling to compete in these races.  If you do not register ahead of time, you can purchase a day license at the race for an additional fee.
